latest versions of mame use virtual memory, which allows larger roms to run, abeit very slowly for loading and long pauses sometimes ingame

128 meg allows you to load about 1/3 more mame roms quickly,
and allows you to play n64 stuff excellently
also makes Linux with the KDE desktop fly - to the point where the xbox is a valid linux computer!

I think you'll find that's

"i've heared a lot of people mess their xboxes up due to their inability to do the ram upgrade"

this aint an upgrade for heavy handed types

Speaking of heavy handed....

We attempted a ram upgrade recently and botched it royally.  I really does not seem that difficult, now that we have watched kingviper's vids again, and see what it actually takes.

The only end problem we have, now that we've removed our botched memory chips, is that my roommate, while pulling off the last chip, removed a pad from the mobo.  Is this going to be a problem if there's no memory even in that slot?  I have tried to boot the box, but it's fraggin.  It has many other modifications, however, so I'm hoping it's something else.

Oh, and if anyone's looking to buy ram, we got ours off broken mobo's from ebay for $15.  Adds the process of removing the ram first, but it's not that difficult to remove if you're patient, which I think is the most important part of upgrading your memory.

I plan on upgrading as well. I want to run Linspire 4.5 Devo on my v1.6. I think this would be better for many kernal applications. Great Poll!

I know its not a easy thing to do, and you hear horror stories every once in while and for the pole obviously theres going to be a lot of no, but i want to get it done if theres anyway to make your xbox "better" then other xbox's people will do it, but how many of these people will go have the ram upgrade done I bet less then 5%.

Given I mainly use my XBox for emulation, I would definately upgrade by XBox to 128Meg in a heartbeat if I could.

Unfortunately there doesn't really seem to be much in the way of reputable places in the UK to get the upgrade done =/
