You can either get a LPC modchip so your xbox will boot up and run, but you wont be able to disable the chip, so the best solution is probably to get an LPC cheapmod, 29-wire Mod unless you plan on having a mod chip installed from this point on.

thanks for the swift reply. i don't mind having the chip installed all the time as the machine is only going to be used as a media center. just looking for the cheapest solution.
one supplier has a 9 wire lpc modchip for £29.99 (http://www.yorvik-consoles.co.uk/main.html#) - would that do the job or does it have to a be a 29 wire job? im not concerned about rescuing the onboard tsop - just leave it dead. all i need is a working machine that i can whack a hd in.

If you want to fix the TSOP, you need a 29-wire modchip. If you just want to be able to use the Xbox (and mod it) any modchip will do. If you want to use Xbox Live you can either get a 29-wire chip and fix the TSOP, or an LPC modchip with 2 or more banks and store a retail BIOS in one of the banks.
