Playing Rar'ed Media
« on: August 03, 2005, 11:29:00 PM »

A couple of hours ago, Spiff a XBMC dev added full rarsupport for media to XBMC CVS

What does this mean?

Well, let me put it this way:

If you were to rip a DVD to say a 733Mb Xvid, and rar it the "warez style" (multiple archives) you no longer have to unpack it!
Note: Warez style = STORED, not compressed rar's. If the little warez kid used compression, it will have to be unpacked, but this can also be done on the fly, it just needs tempspace (as much as the file you want to watch, and a bit of patience). Initial support unpacks to Z, so files can't be too big IF they are Compressed and not Stored.

Yes, it works for dvdimages also, and same restrictions apply, if dvdimage didnt work before, it wont work better now.

Good times, good times!

Hmm, I've messed around and been on/off IRC for about 8 years now. Most files that I encounter are now .rar and in the past were .zip... I've only run into a few .tar files here and there and it was usually having to do with some lamer *nix stuff...

It looks to me as the one thing this is good for is playing a video that was comprised of more than one file. It does nothing for avi or mpg files. Is that correct? What about putting 2 avi or mpg files uncompressed in the same rar, what happens then? Or what if you could rar your entire mp3 collection into a few rar files. That would be awesome.

I have been around IRC since 1996-1997 and yeah things use to come in .zip files that was when Winzip was actually considered good to some people... anyways if you hit big irc servers or even dumps most movies/games are in .tar specially big size files such as DVD-R releases but I'm not going to make this a tar vs rar war so lets just all be happy .rar is now supported biggrin.gif
