I saw some pictures of Samsung drive label.  On the first line, it only says:
CODE
SAMSUNG                                   DVD Master 16E   MODEL SD-616

How do you know if it's a T without taking a look at the pcboard?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm trying to make sure I'm buying the correct one without ever seeing one myself.

I think that is an F.  If I had to choose T or F on that....I would go with F (85-90%)

There is no way to tell if that drive is a T or F or any other letter.  All drives have that sticker.

So what you are saying is that there is NO way to tell if a samsung drive that you are buying is a T or an F???-My xbox dvd drive is slowly dying from overuse (damn HALO) and I NEED a replacment.I live in england and I'm pretty good at finding stuff I need from the net but this sucker is just eluding me-The places I have emailed all came back with 'it's a samsung SD-616' they never know if it's a T or F or whatever.Has anyone in this country had any luck finding a T or an F from anywhere without importing from america???

when i had a 616T it actually said T on the sticker, i think there is a plain-old 616 (no letter) model out there too, as well as the T F E and Q

as always, only T and F work

I was looking at these the otherday, At the top of the sticker they only said 616, but down twords the bottom in the serial number under the bar code, they are labeled 616X... So hopefully that will help...

I was looking on ebay and I found a "Samsung DVD Master 16E SD-616".  On the barcode label it says "SD-616FEB".  I'm guessing its a F but I just want to make sure.  Thanks!

sounds like a F model

the big label tells ya jack squat

but a little label usually just below the larger label will say something like what ya posted

616TEBB etc..... = T model in black (The 2nd B indicates Black drive/tray)

616FEB = F model in beige / white

no, there arent any, the samsung drives that were compatible with the xbox firmware (616t and 616f) were discontinued for non-xbox reletaed reasons, there wont be any more made (which is why they are getting hard to find)

the only side effect is you wont be able to boot without your modchip enabled or read original game discs

Has there been success in adding the 616F or 616t to the xbox and having it look as if nothing has changed.  Am I able to use the original xbox DVD drive "cover"  so when the tray is shut all is flush as it looks original?

This is prob an annoyingly simple question for those that know the answer, but  I couldn't find info about it anywhere.

I was wondering if the xbox DVD drives are RPC1 or RPC2, and how this would affect replacement with a PC drive.
Currently I live between the UK and US so region locks are a problem for me, even with limited changes.
My current philips VAD6011 doesn't seem to bother about region at all, but that is through XBMC with a smartXX mod and after I applied some dongle patch way back.

Interestingly, the DVD remote dongle sold in the UK enables region 2 discs to be played in a US xbox, in case that info is of use to anyone.

From the behaviour I've seen so far I'd say the drives were RPC1 and the region was controlled in some other way, but most PC drives I've looked at are RPC2, so I expect major problems form this unless the xbox drive firmware negates the whole issue?
