i got mine working in less than 5 minutes, the tutorial confused me a bit, i think i could make a more direct + better one, but anyways, no need. Smb is cool, really fast, i think it works way better than relax, and it works with my router whitch is awsome...  laugh.gif

control panel
Systems
Computer Name
Change (rename computer)
Workgroup
Make the workgroup name what ever you want.  "WorkGroup" is default

control panel
go into user accounts and make a new account called xbox
make the password for xbox, xbox.

windows explorer or My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
De-select Use Simple File Sharing

control panel
Network Connections
Select the Nic Card that your mediacenter.xml samba setting is pointing to.
ex. Conection 1 has IP address = to smb IP address.
Make sure u have settings right for DNS and Subnet Mask if Not using DHCP

Create folder(For Share).  Try to do this in the root of a drive.
Right click on folder.
Sharing and Security.
Share this folder.
Name the Shared folder.
Optional go to permission and add xbox if not already pressent or everyone.

MediaCenter.xml
add share: Domain;User Name:Password@ComputerName or IP// share name//
Domain = Workgroup Name = Whatever you made it
User Name = xbox (in this example)
Password = xbox (in this example)
ComputerName = Whatever you made it
IP = the IP of the nic card you will be connecting to from you xbox
Share Name = whatever you made it.

That should do it.
avi files made with divx codecs are not streaming very well at the moment.
so test with a mpg or a wmv.

I am new to this so I was wondering can anyone explain this in a little more detail?  I get the drift (I understand the concepts) but I need a more step by step walkthrough.  I don't quite understand what to edit in the .xml files or how to setup the folders within windows.  Thanks.

Try  reading some of the post within this very thread.

Its all here and if it isn't then ask but don't ask the same stuff over and over or else you wont get answers.  Everyone that sees it will think " I just saw that the other day, they must have seen it by now aswell" or "Someone else will answer him as that is well known and documented".

Try this in XBMC for your <path>:

smb://

Just that and see if you can even see (browse to) your mac os share.

O.K., I've been trying this for days w/o luck.
My computer's running W2K.  It's IP is 192.168.0.5
My xbox is 192.168.0.4
I can ftp no problem.
I've tried everything in my xml.  It's currently:
   <bookmark>
     <name>My Music</name>
     <path>smb://xbox:[email protected]/music/</path>
   </bookmark>
I've set up a user xbox with p/w xbox & administrative rights.
I've set up a permission on my share to xbox.
I couldn't see anything about simple shares.
When I select My Music, I get access denied.
Can anyone help?

Edit: I run Sygate but turng it off doesn't matter.

i'm using win xp pro.

the lines in the xbmc.xml i've got to access pictures is:

<bookmark>
<name>SMB</name>

<path>smb://xxx.xxx.x.xxx/family and friend pictures/</path>
</bookmark>

where xxx.xxx.x.xxx is the ip address of my pc.

keep in mind that "family and friend pictures" is not the folder name of the folder you want to share, it's the share name. the folder name in this case is "My Pictures"

1) right click on the folder you want to share and choose "sharing and security" in the shell menu.

2) select the "share this folder" radio button

3) name the share, i name them something different than the folder name to keep them straight.

4) then select "permissions" and set the permissions for this shared folder (the "share")

5) then choose the "security" tab and set the securities for each user account

that should do it for you, the trickiest part for me was setting the securities for each share because it was all trial and error for me at the time. now it kinda makes sense.

let us know how this works out.

to the win 95/98 users the SAMBA client sends the user name and password info to the server encrypted.  Win 95/98 can not read this encryption.  There maybe a workaround I'm not sure if this would have to be done in the samba source code or in windows.

Here's what my xml has for movies:
    <bookmark>
      <name>My Movies</name>
      <path>smb://192.168.0.3/movies/</path>
    </bookmark>
I chose movies since there are no subfolders.  I renamed my computer to 192.168.0.3 since it seems more stable ftp'ing.
I set the share movies folder permissions to everyone with full control.  I also added user xbox with full control.
In my control panel/users, I created account xbox with password xbox.
Still no go.  I've also tried:
    <bookmark>
      <name>My Movies</name>
      <path>smb://xbox:[email protected]/movies/</path>
    </bookmark>
with no luck.
I have no idea what is wrong.  I've tried everything.  It might have something to do with simple sharing & Win2K, but I can't find out how to solve this.

I always wonder when i see this - if people have used the folder name or share name? is the user name / password correct???

A simple test is as follows (XP)
Open My Computer
  • on menu Tools, select Map Network Drive
  • in the 'Folder' part, enter the name of the share E.G...
      \\192.168.0.1\movies
      or
      \\MyComputerName\MyShare
  • click the link 'Connect using a different user name'
  • enter the user name your xbox will be accessing your PC with
     EG xbox, xbox
  • Hit finish

When you get that to work, use the exact same parameters in your config...
<path>smb://WORKGROUPNAME;xbox:[email protected]/movies</path>
or
<path>smb://WORKGROUPNAME;xbox:xbox@MyComputerName/MyShare</path>

ps, you get your exact WORKGROUPNAME and ComputerName by...
Right clicking My Computer, choose Properties, then click the 'Computer Name' tab

Also, I've seen it mentioned that XP firewall enabled on your NIC can cause problems (dunno - I use WAN router with SPI firewall - not a problem for me)

Lastly, I see in your example above there is no WORKGROUPNAME - not sure if it works without that - never tried - but stick to what i've said & you should be cooking on gas  laugh.gif
