Largest Hd Compatible With Xbl
« on: February 05, 2004, 02:11:00 PM »

I remember a little while back it was mentioned that you couldn't use a HD over a certain size and still be able to use Xbox Live (with your chip disabled)
Is this still the case, and does anyone know what the size limit is on that?

Also, what are the factors that determine that size?  Is it the lack of LBA48?, or the presence of a G partition?

Thanks

the largest lockable HDD is the Maxtor K01J300p

When installing that HDD, you will need a bios that supports LBA48 with a G drive. If you download one of the newer xecuter bioses, you will see that it comes with two files, one with .06, and one with .67. The .06 referes to only having partition 6, which is the F drive. .67 refers to having the F drive and the G drive. Technically, you could have 300 gb HDD w/ the .06 bios, but then your data would eventually corrupt (FATX doesn't like partitions over 250 gb). You would need to reflash your chip w/ a bios that supports lba48. If you want to use a different bios (like the evox m7 bios) that isn't already patched for LBA48, you can edit the bios with xbtool. Reflash your chip, then format the G drive using an evox boot disc, and then edit your programs to recognize the g drive. After that, lock your HDD, and you'll be ready to go.

Thanks, although I know most of that already.  I currently run a 250GB with 4979.06 TSOP flash.

I'm positive I read somewhere (shortly after the LBA48 patch came out) that people had gotten banned using Xbox Live when they were using larger hard drives.  I don't remember how large though.  I know you can use anything under 137GB obviously.  What I am wondering about is if there is some check with XBL that detects something 250GB plus?  I don't know what exactly it would detect....,

but can someone confirm that they run a 250+ GB hard drive on live with no problems?  And also, if you can confirm this, are you using a .06 or .67 bios when running modded?

that doesnt matter, when you boot with a retail bios it only sees 8gb, no matter how big the drive is

same as with a G partition, that partition doesnt exist on the retail bios, so MS has no way of knowing if its there or not when you boot with your modchip disabled

as long as you can boot with your modchip disbaled you can go on Live (and you need your HD locked to boot with the modchip disabled) and as trevante said, currently the largest lockable HD is 300gb
