Help On Repair Soldering A 1.1 Xbox
« on: January 26, 2004, 05:36:00 AM »

A buddy of mine was soldering his 1.1 xbox, and accidentally put solder on one of the surface mount resistors on the bottom join on the mainboard.  In the solder removal process to prevent closing that gap, he removed the surface mount (as they're so touchy, heat and stick, blammo it's off) resistor in the process.

Now we've tried cleaning up the solder and putting the resistor back on, but as it's so small it's an imperfect science.  I've also tried just closing it period, taking that resistor out, and a variety of other things... still no luck.

Now the key here, is that the xbox still works fine, I just get a , UNKNOWN DEVICE blah blah READ ONLY??? error when trying to flash with raincoat.

Anyone know if there's a workaround, a resistor I can buy and put in, or any way to repair this so that the TSOP can be flashed?  It doesn't matter if it means removing the resistor altogether, but I don't know if it's required in order to flash.

Otherwise all the proper joins have been made, or at least I think they have.

L'il help? :P  <

"UNKNOWN DEVICE blah blah READ ONLY??? " means that you still haven't connected the two original points for TSOP flashing properly.

If you lost that one resistor, I don't think its a big deal.  Just short the two points together, or make some feeble attempt to get the resistor back on.  It won't really make a difference.

Well, that's what I thought too... but I've been over those joins with a magnifying glass, and looked at them from all angles, and they all appear to be solid.

So I'm wondering if someone can confirm or deny that the resistor makes a difference between read only / writeable TSOP, or if I'm really just missing something.  <

yeah man, Ive got the EXACT same problem - killed that lil resistor.  Ive re soldered and ive checked all my solder points over and over with my multimeter and they are perfect connections.  still says write protected or whatever. :(

How long ago did you do this (ie; have you been fighting with it for months and still no luck?) or is it something recent.

Part of me still hopes there's a way to fix it, so bumpedybump again :)  <

Lukano: Visual inspection is hit-and-miss.
I'd try using a ohmmeter.

I'm sure if you short the points that used to be connected by the resistor, it'll still work.
check that using an ohmmeter too.  <

yeah it's recent - yesterday infact... ive shorted the place where the resistor was and the box works fine - i swear my solders are 100% they're beutiful and ive checked with my multimeter (is checking with an ohm meter any different?) i'd really appreciate any help cos now that i've voided the warranty i might as well finish the job  .

thanks, Steve.  <

A multimeter is a ohm meter, or at least, has one on it.  Anyway... make sure you check your points further down the line.   Follow the line on the motherboard untill you find another point you can use to test.

Testing the connection you made (locally) will only test that a current can pass though solder, which we knew already!  <

Well Lukano...afraid to say that resistor is a crucial part of the tsop flash.  When you join the points that are required to flash the xbox, if you notice, the trace that leads from one of the points goes directly to the SMT resistor.  It HAS to be there and working properly.

Your only hope is to find out what impedence that resistor is and try to put one back on with the same impedience (doesn't have to be SMT but it would help alot)

If you don't go SMT, just use a regular resistor with the same impedence and cut the legs down to as short as you can get them without destroying it and solder it to the spot where the original resistor went.

Otherwise, tsop flashing your xbox will be impossible without a milksop tsop clip or desoldering the tsop off the board and flashing it with an eeprom programmer.  <

well, that answers that question - thanks for the help man :D , now can anyone help with finding the impedence of that lil resistor
thanks Steve.  <

take a multimeter put a probe on each side of the resistor, and read the measurement. Make sure that the multimeter is set to ohms (looks like a nuclear bomb). If you dont get a reading go up one on the scale until you get a reading. .If you dont have a multimeter go to a local electronics store with the resistor and ask them to help. Good luck with the repair.

put a 1K resistor on it and the xbox flashed, but bad news, after using raincoat to install X2 4981.67 (programmed and verified), the xbox restarted and went FRAG.  the resistor point is fine :S

edit: i think i may just be a moron.  installed a 256k bios.  will try the 3 wire method to see if it works again.
