Winxp On Xbox?
« on: May 11, 2005, 12:42:00 AM »

I know this has been covered, and I hate that this has to be my 1st post, but... I think my question has a bit of a different twist!

I just bought a basically brand new Xbox from a frined that just got sent to Iraq for $85.00.  The thing is about 3-5 months old.

I belong to another forum online, maybe some of you know about it (MP3Car.com).  This forum is about putting computers in your car.

I've done the math, and with what I want to do, I'm not sure I want to spend $1000 on my whole setup.

I was thinking that maybe there might be a way to format the hard drive on the XBox, and just use it as a regular computer and installing Windows XP.  I know that Linux can be put on it, but the current GPS programs available for Linux suck IMHO.

Is there any way to do this?  I know it will prob need some sort of Mod chip or firmware update, but just out of curiosity, is it possible?  It would be really cool to be able to do my whole setup for under $600.

Thanks!

Peace,

Rafster

Not enough ram for one.  Windows 98se runs OK, nothing special.  So now try imagining XP running at a rate that is worth the time.  Nope.  If you just want it for playing mp3's, vids, pictures, visualization, and a ton of other stuff, use Xbox Media Center.  I have it in my truck and a new world opened up.

i heard that you need at least 64 mg ram for XP and the xp has that so if you did install it it wouldnt be able to do much. well not what you want it to.

Last I heard people were trying to get XP-E running on the Xbox. If you ask me, it'd probably be easier to hack around in the cromwell bios...

XP needs 92 MB to run by itself. So imagine trying to run everything on 64MB plus other programs!

u can upgrade the ram.. which you prolly wont do.

if you have an xbox 1.6, they have a different video chipset, and i dont think it works with any version of linux except the gentoox one which i dont know why it works.

I had Windows XP running on my xbox through QEMU/XDSL without any hardware upgrades and it ran extremely slow... it took about two minutes to boot (five or so minutes to fully load) and I tried to run notepad, which didn't show up for a minute, so not too much hope there.

IMO emulation sucks compared to native. Basically: Qemu, and every other x86 emulator out there can only give you a FRACTION of the host's performance. Simplified again: There's a big performance difference between emulators like Qemu and actually running something natively like XP on onlinebacon's laptop.

Seriously...look at this.

My Crappy computer (in my room, fileserver)

64 MB PC100 SDRAM
700 MHz AMD Processor
15 GB HDD
CD-RW, DVD-ROM
Nvidia GeForce 5600

Comparing that to an xbox, it's litteraly the exact same!
(In other words, yes, it's possible, but it's gonna be slow as HELL)

As far as I heard, the onboard xbox ram is shared at times with the video, whereas your Gforce card has it's own ram to fall back on. I think the ram that is 'steady' to the main system in the xbox is about 48 meg and the rest is shared......and yeah sometimes the main system gets the whole chunk. Either way,is it that hard to install linux and emulate win98?

No, but why the heck listen to me? Let's all go and run it on a slow as all hell emulation! Heaven forbid someone try and get it to run natively to get it running on a decent speed!

As you can see, I'm SICK of all these idiots saying 'We've got windows on the X-box, just use linux!'. It's not Windows on Xbox, it's Windows on Linux for goddness sakes! I bet noone said to people who were interested in linux 'Why not just emulate it with some crappy X86 emulator?'

I think that you guys have this all wrong.  He doesn't want all this XP, linux, w/e crap; he really just wants to turn his Xbox into a standard PC with a FAT32 or w/e file system.

No Xbox games intended.

I would however agree that just using Xbox Media Center is your best bet.  People have tried converting/building their own Xboxes and very few actually succeded.

Gentoox does not have the Xcalibur video drivers. Infact only MS and nvidia have access to the hardware/software architecture for the xcaliber chip. Gentoox uses clever trickery to acheive an acceptable display but its by no means perfect either.
