Bios Sizes
« on: January 13, 2004, 03:41:00 AM »

Hey guys,
I know this may have been answered multiple times in here before, but could someone give a quick rundown of the bios sizes for the diff versions of the xbox?

I know that v1.4 and v1.5 are 256K..and pretty sure that v1.3 is 256K..right?
And the 1.0 is a 1 Meg chip.
What about the 1.1 and 1.2?

Thanks.  <

Bios Sizes

Hi, I'm just a bit confused on the size of the bios, could someone please explain to me:
I got a v1.4 or 1.5 xbox, with a winbond chip and I read a a lot of posts including this post which told me that my winbond bios chip is 256k in size.
A couple of nights ago, I successfully flashed my onboard bios with raincoat .501 using the Xecuter 256K bios, however, before I flashed my onboard bios, I did a backup of the bios.  This morning when I checked the backup file of the bios and it is 1Meg in size. :uhh:

So my questions are:
1. Is my bios chip really is 256K in size?
2. If it is 256K then why the backed up bios file "bios.bin" is 1Meg in size?

Thanks in advance.  <

when you do a backup with evox.. it will always make the bios.bin file 1m. it just means its got the 256k bios x 4 in it.   <

So if I am flashing an old v1.0 or 1.1 box (1mb bios) using Evox, if I flash with a 256k bios will Evox fill it by writing 4x?  Same question with raincoat 0.5, will it fill up a 1mb bios with 4x 256k or do I have to make a 1mb bios to match the chip?

If you use a 256k .bin to flash a 1mb bios and it only writes over 1/4 of it... that's something that could happen right?  and we need to avoid it?  <

EvolutionX resizes the bios to the correct size.
Raincoat 0.3 does NOT resize the bios.
Raincoat 0.5/0.501 do NOT resize the bios.
Raincoat 0.6 can resize the bios.
Raincoat 0.7 always resizes the bios.

Hope that clears it up.

Correct we do need to avoid this, although there are ways of fixing it later (switches and/or chips), best to do it right first time.
