1.0 With Winbond Chip?
« on: December 17, 2003, 12:12:00 PM »

I have tsoped a few xboxes, but all of them have been 1.0 hynix chips. i opened up this xbox today and was doing the usual rounds of soldering the points and went to evox thorugh 007.

right as im about to flash i see winbond chip on the screen. it wouldnt flash. checked the forums and just about every post links the winbond chip to 1.3-higher xboxes.

so my question is, should i just use raincoat to flash this bios? and has anyone ever stumbled across a 1.0 xbox with this chip before?

Raincoat should do it fine, it will not flash unless it recognises the chip (which  is ini data). Make sure you have the newest version, make sure you backup the original bios (See the pinned 007 guide) that way you can be certain you are dealing with a 1 meg bios not a 256k. (very unlikely but you never know) and then prepare bios and flash, it'll be fine.

I'm sure I've seen one in a 1.0 but I couldn't be certain.

Yes, I've run into a Winbond on a 1.0.

And yes, the only way to flash it is with Raincoat 0.501.  Older versions will detect the Winbond, but it will appear as if your bios is write protected unless you have the fixed version of Raincoat.

yeah, check the number, if it 0x900 or soemthing liek that your sodlering is wrong

however it may actually have a winbond chip (if MS had to replace the chip as a refurb they would have installed whatever chip they were using at the time, apparently winbond)
