How To Tsop Flash This Box?
« on: December 12, 2003, 12:31:00 PM »

Am I right in saying this is a v1.1 and needs the top and bottom points bridged for a successful flash?

The 'box has: 1Mb (i.e full width -- same size as my v1.0 box, not smaller like the 1.3 I did last week) ST M29F080A BIOS chip, no header USB mini-board for the controllers, Philips DVDROM, no fan on northbridge, no solder in the LPC debug block's connections.

It has no R7D10 point near the LPC block, but it does have a R7D3.

Also, I've heard of problems with (some?) of the ST chips. Anything I should beware?

Thanks in advance.

You have one odd xbox.  Maybe I havent payed enough attention to size but Im almost positive that there is no physical size difference between 1mb 1.0-1 bios and the 256k 1.2-5 bios.  The chip you specified IS a 1MB chip.  Ive never seen a 1.0-1 without the usb header card.   R7D3 is basically the same as R7D10 on a 1.2-5 but you need determine wether or not you have R7D2 shown here:

or

If you dont have that point you should have R7R3 on the bottom of the mobo.

I would base the version on what points exist.

If you dont have a usb header you should have a double row ATX power supply connector vs. 1 row correct?  If so, that and no GPU fan, no usb header would sound like a 1.2+ to me.  I think I would double check R7D10 and R7D2 and make sure that you dont actually have those points before ruling it a 1.0-1.  It is really odd that everything would seem to be a 1.2 or higher yet there is a 1Mb bios on it.. Maybe its a factory referb and a 256k was accidentally replaced with a 1Mb or something.

Now that Ive talked in circles I guess what I would do is jump the points that I actually have in regards to write enable vs. version.. Then flash it with Evox and a 256k bios since it will multiply itself on a 1mb chip.

Nope, it has a one row power connector, the V1.0 style. It also has orange warning stickers on the bottom and a manufacturing date of 2002-09-20.

Seems like a bit of a weird one to me. Anyway, looking closely at the motherboard, that at least had to be a V1.0/1 one; the points just don't match the V1.2+ layout. I bridged it as a V1.0/1 and did the flash; it was, as you said, a 1Mb chip and it flashed perfectly with raincoat.

Which just leaves me with the puzzle of why this V1.0/1 doesn't have a USB header. I snapped some bad pics here but the one of the LPC pins didn't come out and I have to return the box now, so I suppose this puzzle will go unanswered. Still, all's well that ends well!

edit: stupid UBB code not HTML grumble gumble

I've never seen a 1.1 with a USB header board myself.

I believe only 1.0's have them.
