As long as your friend has configured his firewall and/or router and such, you should manage to connect to his XBox, PC, refridgerator and his dog house.

I assume that your friend has a router that allows him to have a range of private ip addresses on the 'inside' of the router and that he has an official IP address that is different from his internal ones.

If so, your friend need a dashboard on the XBox that supports passive mode transfers.
Avalaunch supports passive transfers.
